We exited out the front door.

Carol handed the keys to Laura while keeping her shotgun ready. Laura thumbed the fob, but the car didn’t unlock. The key worked on the driver’s side door.

Kermit and Bennett piled in the rearmost seat, with Chewie and Carol waiting at the passenger side for someone to unlock it.

I kept an eye on the house. No sign that Shadow knew we were leaving. Hopefully, he was still in the backyard with the crafting station. Laura squeezed into the driver’s seat. Whoever had last used the car must have been short, and she was having trouble getting the seat to move back.

“You said Shadow was out back,” Bennett said. “Why are we running?”

Laura pushed with her butt to slide the seat back. “We can’t trust him. Come on, stupid thing.”

“No dome light,” Kermit said. “Battery’s out.”

She stuck the key in the ignition. Turned it a few times before slamming the steering wheel with her palms.

A Transportation Asset appeared in the Range Rover’s cargo space. It hadn’t been there before. I leaned over Kermit and grabbed it. A roach skirted around my foot and scampered towards the front tire. A dozen of its buddies trailed along behind it. The game was here.

“Get out. Everyone.”

The Acid Zombie smashed open a side gate and strode towards us. Shadow limped along behind it. His health was full, but he remained injured.

“What’s the rush, guys?”

Carol turned her weapon on him. Her grip was less than steady.

He raised his hands. “Woah, hey! I’m with them. You’re Carol, right? Chewie’s wife?”

I got between Shadow and the Range Rover, with Stealth up for good measure. He still appeared to have trouble seeing me.

“Stay back, Shadow. And keep that thing with you.”

“Will you relax? We’re on the same side here. You want to bring everyone to the exit? Great, let’s do it. But taking that SUV out on the road will only get you killed. You’d know that if you paid attention to what Crimson Gauntlet is telling you. It wants us on foot unless we earn our wheels.”

“What did you do to Kirsten back at the trailer park?”

His face clouded. “Why, Hagar, whatever are you implying?”

“Tell me it was an accident.”

“How about you show yourself and we talk? What’s with you guys running off without telling me? And where’s the gratitude? I just saved your ass.”

Laura was out of the car and took the shotgun from Carol. Her hands were rock steady as she aimed at the acid zombie. “Is what Eddie said true?”

Shadow’s pet cocked its head and pivoted towards her.

A ball of green energy appeared in Shadow’s hand. “Don’t point that thing at me, Rosette. It didn’t go well for the scumbags in the grocery store.”

He was calling her by her game name too now.

I readied my fist. My claws were out. “Why’d you really come and find us?”

“This is where the quests take me.”

With a mental command, he could send his machine in and murder the others. Laura might get a shot or two off, but it would be over.
